These directions apply to ANESTENKA benzocaine 10%, a 2 mL oral topical solution. The amount and frequency come from its printed Drug Facts panel.
Application and ages
Adults and children 12 years or older: wash hands, remove the cap and cut off the dispenser tip. Use a clean finger or cotton swab to apply a small, pea-sized amount to the affected area. Use up to four times daily or as directed by a dentist or doctor.
Children under 12: consult a dentist or doctor; do not use unless directed by that professional. Do not use for teething.
Four limits to remember
- Do not apply more than directed.
- Do not use for teething.
- Do not use for more than seven days unless directed by a dentist or doctor.
- Do not use a tube whose tip was cut before opening.
When to seek advice
This product provides temporary relief until a dentist can be contacted. Stop use and seek advice if pain, redness or irritation persists or worsens, or swelling, rash or fever develops. Fever and nasal congestion may indicate infection and require advice if they do not go away.
Not a teething product
The package warning and FDA advice agree: do not use benzocaine for teething pain. The direction to consult a professional for children under 12 should not be interpreted as an indication for babies.
Signs requiring immediate attention
Benzocaine may cause methemoglobinemia, a serious condition that reduces the oxygen carried in the blood, even after previous use. Stop use and seek medical attention immediately for pale, gray or blue skin, headache, rapid heart rate, shortness of breath, dizziness or fatigue.
